Another new record?
Well, not reeeaaaaally. I mean, it’s the biggest number we’ve had in the infographic, but it also represents two weeks work. So, divide it in half.
Is that bad? No, actually it’s pretty good, solid progress. I can live with over 2K words a week. That’s a fine pace.
Anything new of note?
We’re ridiculously close to finishing off a big section of the book. We meant for it to be a short story, but it’s blown past short story length by a couple thousand words.
That’s not a terrible thing. The current section has essentially become Mickey’s origin story. It’s a look into a mystery she solved (in the year 2000) when she was 12-years-old. We didn’t originally know what that mystery would be when we set out, but it’s becoming a crucial part of her past and ultimately her future. It’s big and emotional and intense.
I expect the section will be finished by the end of next week. But that kind of scares me because I’ve enjoyed being in this 1999 groove. I know that when it’s done I have to go back to our main plot. And if I’m honest, I’m not feeling crazy confident in that plot, or at least not in the details.
Right now, I very much know where I’m headed. I have the scenes and the dialogue worked out in my mind. I know the denouement. I know the last paragraph. After that, Kitty and I will be back in the fog.
Anywhodiddlydoodle: When the section is done and edited, we’re thinking about serializing it over the course of a week as a paid-subscriber exclusive series. It’ll be a nice interim tale, and since it takes place in Mickey’s past, we can preserve the mystery in the present.
So, maybe think about upgrading to paid.
What about the day job?
This Friday will be my last day at my current job. I think I have three months of severance (they haven’t given me the paperwork yet) so it’s not a total emergency and I’m grateful that I get severance at all! But I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t scared shitless.
At the same time, I’m excited to see what kind of dent I can make in the novel during that time. Finding another gig will certainly be a huge part of my days, but I really don’t think it will take up all of my time. I’m hoping to sit down in the mornings and move the story along.
So how are you going to live?
I’m hooked into some opportunities for freelance work, so I plan on pitching and writing while I look for a regular gig.
That said, if you happen to know of anyone who needs a good writer, hit me up! I’m open to any leads you might have.
